Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Chimney Cleaning in Near South Side, IL | Brightway Chimney Sweep
We provide independent HeatShield chimney cleaning and ceramic flue resurfacing across Near South Side, including ZIP 60663. The thing that sets our HeatShield work apart here is the housing stock: rows of 1870s – 1910s brick workers’ cottages and two-flats, many with shared flues and coal-era liners that need careful prep before any relining product goes in. Call (833) 365-6591 for a free estimate, and we’ll scope your flue with a Level 2 camera before recommending anything.
Why Near South Side Residents Choose Us for HeatShield Service
Brightway Chimney Sweep has swept and relined hundreds of Chicago masonry chimneys, and HeatShield is one of the systems we reach for when a flue needs ceramic resurfacing rather than full demolition. We’re an independent contractor, not a HeatShield-authorized dealer. That distinction matters. Our credibility comes from repetition on Near South Side chimneys, not from a manufacturer badge. We follow HeatShield’s published prep and cure specs because those are what hold up through Chicago freeze-thaw cycles, and we’ve seen what happens when someone cuts corners: delamination within a season, thin spots at tile offsets, blistered liners behind leaking crowns.
Neil Borowski grew up a few blocks from Eckhart Park in West Town and has spent the better part of three decades working on the chimneys and dryer vents of the same kind of two-flats and greystones Near South Side is built on. He picked up the fundamentals through the HVAC and building systems program at Triton College before apprenticing with a veteran sweep who taught him that most fireplace problems start long before you smell smoke in the house. We built Brightway around a straightforward idea: homeowners deserve an honest inspection and a clear explanation, not a list of upsells. That’s why we HeatShield sales & service work starts with a camera, not a quote.

Common HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Problems We Solve in Near South Side
- Delaminated HeatShield over soot-saturated brick. Many Near South Side flues started life venting coal, then got converted to gas without ever being properly lined. When HeatShield resurfacing goes over brick that was never cleaned to bare masonry, the coating loses bond within a heating season. We sweep to bare substrate first, then apply at spec thickness.
- Thin spots at offset clay tiles in shared two-flat flues. The jogged, off-set tile work common in 1890s two-flats won’t take a uniform pour around the bend. Without careful leveling, those thin areas fail on the first hard freeze. We camera-scope every offset before mixing a bag.
- Voids behind the HeatShield layer from spalled tile shoulders. Freeze-thaw spalling in Near South Side’s exposed chimney stacks leaves gaps behind a fresh liner. We backfill with HeatShield Insulation Mix so the ceramic layer isn’t bridging empty space when the masonry shifts seasonally.
- Blistering and bond loss from crown and flashing leaks. Cracked mortar crowns on greystones let water behind a fresh HeatShield lining before it fully cures. If the crown is leaking, we fix it as part of the reline, not as an afterthought.
- Creosote glaze from decades of low-temp gas venting. Gas appliances vent cooler than coal fires, which lets creosote condense and glaze inside older flues. HeatShield won’t bond to glazed creosote, so removal is step one. We’ve pulled heavy glaze out of more Near South Side flues than we can count.
HeatShield Service in Near South Side: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Because most Near South Side two-flats share a single chimney stack between units, any HeatShield reline here has to be scoped off a Level 2 camera inspection of every flue in the stack. One unit’s damaged tile is often the neighbor’s venting problem too, and access to both sides becomes part of the job. We’ve had calls where a homeowner in a brick worker’s cottage near the old Stock Yards lots smelled gas backdrafting from a water heater, and the actual failure was a spalled clay tile in the neighbor’s flue two courses below the shared crown. You can’t fix that by lining one side. You have to see the whole stack. That’s the Near South Side reality most generic chimney pages skip, and it’s why we won’t quote a HeatShield job here without a camera run first. Chicago’s heating season runs October through April, which is when these shared stacks get their heaviest use and when most service calls come in.
HeatShield Models & Products We Service in Near South Side
We work with the full HeatShield product line: the Cerfractory Flue Sealant for unlined masonry flues, the Resurfacing System for damaged clay tile liners, Armor Coat for crack bridging and spalled tile rehab, and the Insulation Mix for backfilling voids behind relined flues. We use HeatShield’s own Cerfractory and insulation mixes rather than generic castable refractories, because the cure schedule and thickness specs are what produce a warranty-grade bond. We source dampers, caps, and crowns from established US suppliers when OEM equivalents don’t exist. We’ll also tell you plainly when a HeatShield reline is the right spend and when the chimney is too far gone, in which case a DuraFlex stainless liner or a partial rebuild makes more sense.

FAQs – HeatShield Chimney Cleaning in Near South Side
Will a HeatShield reline work on a Near South Side two-flat where my flue is shared with the neighboring unit?
Yes, but only if we camera-scope every flue in the shared stack first. HeatShield can reline one unit’s flue while leaving the neighbor’s alone, but if the neighbor’s tile is failing at the same offset, you’ll be back in the same spot next year. We’ll recommend what the camera shows. Call (833) 365-6591 and we’ll schedule the inspection.
My 1890s cottage flue still has coal-era soot and creosote. Can HeatShield go right over it?
No. The brick has to be swept to bare masonry before HeatShield Cerfractory is applied, or the coating delaminates within a season. We remove all soot and creosote, then check the substrate with a camera before mixing any product. That prep step is non-negotiable in Near South Side’s older stock. Call us to set up a cleaning and inspection.
How does Chicago’s freeze-thaw affect a HeatShield lining in an unlined brick chimney?
Freeze-thaw cycles expand and contract the brick and mortar behind the HeatShield layer. If the liner was applied over uncleaned brick or without proper backfill insulation, that movement causes cracking and bond loss, usually within the first winter. We prep and backfill specifically to survive Near South Side’s October-to-April heating season. Call (833) 365-6591 if you suspect your liner is failing.
Do you need access to my neighbor’s unit for a cleaning visit?
Often, yes. In Near South Side two-flats with shared chimney stacks, we may need to access the neighboring unit’s cleanout or roof hatch to scope the full flue run. We coordinate that access as part of the job and let you know early if it’s needed. It’s the kind of logistics we handle regularly on this side of the city. Call us with questions.
Is Brightway authorized or certified by HeatShield?
No. We’re an independent HeatShield service provider. We use their Cerfractory, Armor Coat, and Insulation Mix products and follow the manufacturer’s published prep and cure specs, but we have no authorization or certification from HeatShield. Our track record on Near South Side service area chimneys is our only credential, and we’re comfortable standing on it. Call (833) 365-6591 for an honest assessment, even if the answer is that you don’t need a reline yet.
